The Cyclones men’s golf team participated in the annual Big 12 Match Play. The event opened with two rounds Monday, followed by two more Tuesday and a lone, final round Wednesday.
Match Play is a unique event on the golf schedule which pairs up two teams in the Big 12, and pits their five golfers against one another. Scores are then based on individuals’ wins over one another in order to score overall points for their respective teams.
Iowa State was sorted into Pool A, with Cincinnati and Arizona State.
Day one ends with no points
The Cyclones were not involved in the morning session of Match Play, leaving them to begin play in the afternoon.
Their first round of play found them matched up against Cincinnati. In its match-up, the Iowa State finished 1-4 with the Bearcats. Freshman Luke Metcalf was the singular Cyclones golfer to best their opponent during the first day’s session.
Day two results in first points
The second day of play opened with the Cyclones pitted against the Arizona State Sun Devils. Iowa State ended with its first points of the event with 2.5 match points in the morning round.
In the afternoon, the Cyclones also collected their first match victory. Iowa State faced TCU and ultimately pulled a 3-2 victory over the Horned Frogs. This resulted in the Cyclones collecting their first total points of the event, finishing with one total point and 3.5 match points heading into the final day of play.
Day three ends in a tie
Day three found the Cyclones faced with the Kansas State Wildcats with the ninth-place finish on the line.
Iowa State would ultimately split the match evenly, resulting in a tie for ninth place. Junior Paul Beauvy and sophomore Owen Sawyer got the win over their opponents, while junior Zach May tied, resulting in the 2-2-1 split that left Iowa State and Kansas State in a stalemate.
The Cyclones were set to head to Vero Beach, Florida, for their next and final event of the fall chapter of the golf season. However, due to Hurricane Milton, the event was canceled. That means Iowa State will be off until February, when they will return for the N.I.T. in Tucson, Arizona.
