This semester, the Department of World Languages and Cultures is hosting “Kaffeeklatsch,” a German cultural tradition to gather to enjoy cake and coffee and talk with others.
“Kaffeeklatsch” translates to “coffee chatting” or “coffee gossip” and is a German tradition that is celebrated throughout Europe.
Traditionally, “kaffee und kuchen,” or coffee and cake time, happens on Sundays in the afternoon or early evening, but it can vary by location. It is designated as time to get together with friends and family, share cake and coffee and conversate. It is also commonly referred to as “kaffeestunde,” which translates to coffee hour.
At Iowa State, “Kaffeeklatsch” is an opportunity to become immersed in German culture and language, practice speaking skills, play games and meet new people. Coffee and snacks are served each week, with cake every other week.
“Kaffeeklatsch” was started back up for the first time this semester since the COVID-19 pandemic. It is led by Jenny Robins, an assistant teaching professor of German at ISU.
“It’s basically just a time for students, faculty and community members, too, to just enjoy the German language,” Robins said.
Robins, who has been speaking German for about 20 years, is passionate about the language and culture and eager to engage in it with others in the Ames community.
It is not required to be taking German courses to attend; all students, faculty and community members are welcome to come and join in this time-honored German tradition.
“I brought my roommate the other day, and she doesn’t know any German, but anybody is welcome to come,” said Sophia Schrader, a senior in management information systems who is learning German in her spare time. “We always like just introducing people to new culture.”
The event is a laid-back way to experience and participate in German customs and work on your German-speaking skills with the added bonus of refreshments.
“Kaffeeklatsch” is held each week on Tuesdays from 3:15 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. in the Memorial Union Multicultural Center, starting Feb. 18 to April 29, with the exception of March 4.
