No. 54 Iowa State lost 4-2 to No. 13 Texas Tech on the road Sunday. Iowa State sits at 7-3 after the loss and closes its three-game road trip.
Texas Tech is 28-3 all-time against the Cyclones, and Iowa State remains winless in Lubbock.
The Red Raiders’ No. 76 doubles pairing of Andreea Lila and Jermine Sherif struck first. On the No. 3 court, they beat Iowa State sophomore Suzanie Pretorius and sophomore Valeska San Martin Ramirez 6-1.
On the second court, Texas Tech’s Yekaterina Dmitrichenko and Hailey Murphy took the doubles point. They beat Cyclone freshmen Julia Camblor and Mari Paz Alberto Vilar 6-1.
Camblor evened the match with her singles win. At the No. 2 spot, Camblor beat Mariia Hlahola 7-5, 6-1.
Lila responded for the Red Raiders. Iowa State freshman Cristina Ramos Sierra took the first set but could not get back on track. Lila won 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 on court No. 4.
Dmitrichenko added fuel to the fire, extending Texas Tech’s lead. Vilar kept it competitive but ultimately fell in the third set. On the No. 3 court, Dmitrichenko won 3-6, 6-4, 6-0.
No. 81-ranked senior Anna Supapitch Kuearum kept the Cyclones afloat. Kuearum battled back after losing the first set. At the top spot, she beat Avelina Sayfetdinova 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.
However, Kuearum’s win would be in vain. Texas Tech’s Sherif clinched the win on court No. 6. Sherif topped the Cyclones’ Ramirez 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Iowa State held its own versus Texas Tech. In enemy territory, the Cyclones were able to win a few singles matches and stay competitive with a top-15 team in the country.
Iowa State will look to bounce back at 4 p.m. Friday when it hosts Arizona.
