The Cyclones placed 10th in the Big 12 Championships in Federal Way, Washington, this week. Arizona State placed first in the event, with Arizona and Houston coming in second and third respectively.
Although Iowa State finished last in the event as a team, there were many individual standouts. The Cyclones sent six athletes to the finals.
Senior Carley Caughron was the first finalist for Iowa State, finishing 20th in the 100 freestyle. She set a personal record of 50.22 in the event.
Junior Ally Blumenfeld placed 13th in the platform dive with a spectacular 221.95. The performance continues a great season for Blumenfeld.
Freshman Anja Peck had an extremely promising performance at her first Big 12 Championships. Peck brought home 12th in the 200 breaststroke.
The 200 breaststroke was far and away the strongest for the Cyclones. Freshman Grace Swoboda and sophomore Abbi Crum finished 15th and 22nd respectively, both making the finals.
Senior Mallory Miller had a strong performance in the mile freestyle, setting a personal best of 16:53.63 for 19th place.
The Iowa State 400 freestyle relay of Caughron, Swoboda, sophomore Keirlyn Mullica and graduate student Andie Quirke placed ninth in the event.
The performance in the Big 12 Championship rounds out the season for the swimmers. The Iowa State dive team will head to Iowa City on March 10 for the NCAA Zone Diving competition.
