AMES — Iowa State takes on the Kansas City Roos at 4 p.m. Wednesday in Ames. The midweek matchup brings a test of a different speed for the Cyclones after nine straight conference games.
Iowa State is 17-17 this season and hopes to rebound after a 13-0 trouncing from BYU on Saturday. Despite dropping two of three games in that series, the Cyclones have been playing well in the Big 12 this season. They are 7-5 in conference play, and although they cooled down last weekend, they are 6-4 in their last 10.
Meanwhile, the Roos have been a completely different story. They are 4-28 this season and are currently on a nine-game skid.
Coming off of a series against North Dakota in which Kansas City lost all three, it will also seek a rebound and a much needed win. However, when the Roos take the field in Ames, they’ll be facing an even tougher challenge because they are 0-15 on the road.
Despite all the troubles this season, there is hope for Kansas City. In last year’s matchup, the Roos beat Iowa State 7-3. In light of the loss, it will be important for the Cyclones to not get complacent, even though they are 13-4 against the Roos in series history.
Iowa State head coach Jamie Pinkerton sees the game as an opportunity to work on cleaning things up after the long conference stretch and a chance to try new lineups.
“That’s what midweeks are for,” Pinkerton said. “You come out and work on some things and hopefully get some people some work.”
Players like sophomore Paige Zender and junior Ashley Minor, who have played well in limited appearances, will likely have the chance to see some action in the game Wednesday.
All in all, the midweek matchup should present an opportunity for Iowa State to flip the script from its loss Saturday and get back in its groove before conference play kicks back up this weekend against No. 17 Oklahoma State.
The Cyclone Sports Complex is set and the forecast is bright for Wednesday’s matchup. The showdown will be streamed live on ESPN+.
