No. 65 Iowa State defeated No. 53 Kansas State 4-1 at home Friday evening. With the win, the Cyclones move to 11-9 overall and 5-7 in conference play.
Iowa State is now 4-1 in the last five seasons against the Wildcats. However, Kansas State still leads the series 28-15.
The Cyclones landed the first blow in doubles. The pairing of senior Anna Supapitch Kuearum and freshman Cristina Ramos Sierra beat Charlotte Keitel and Maralgoo Chogsomjav 6-1 on court No. 1.
Freshmen Julia Camblor and Mari Paz Alberto Vilar followed that up with Iowa State’s second doubles win to clinch the doubles point. They beat Sana Garakani and Maria Santos 6-2 on court No. 2.
In singles, Camblor continued to dominate. She put the Cyclones up 2-0 with her win. Camblor topped Zhanel Rustemova 6-1, 6-1 on court No. 2.
Ramos Sierra got the second singles win of the evening for Iowa State. She beat Veronika Kulhava 6-0, 6-4 on court No. 4.
With the Wildcats down 3-0, they need a spark. Chogsomjav gave them some hope. She beat No. 119-ranked Kuearum 1-6, 6-4, 6-1 on court No. 1.
However, it would be too little too late, as freshman Suzanie Pretorius snuffed out the spark. She beat Santos 6-4, 7-5 on court No. 5 to seal the Cyclones’ win.
This was Iowa State’s fourth win against ranked competition.
Iowa State hosts No. 19 Oklahoma State at 12 p.m. Sunday from the Iowa State Tennis Facility to finish out the regular season.
