AMES – Junior Sydney Malott and sophomore Lauren Schurman were both given Big 12 weekly awards for Week 10 on Tuesday.
Malott was named Player of the Week and Schurman was named Pitcher of the Week. The sweep marks the first time Cyclones have won both awards in the same week since 2017.
Malott played a huge role in the series win over No. 18 Oklahoma State. She went 4-for-10 at the plate and hit four home runs. With six RBIs, her scoring was an important factor propelling Iowa State to a pair of upset wins against a ranked opponent.
She has been a key addition to the team this year after transferring from Illinois, batting .304 and leading the team in home runs with nine.
Schurman made three appearances, and the team got the win in each game she took the field. In the midweek game against Kansas City, she gave up zero runs on two hits in 2.1 innings pitched.
In Friday’s game against Oklahoma State, Schurman pitched four innings, only giving up one run on four hits against the high-powered Cowgirl offense to lead the Cyclones to the win. On Sunday, she pitched 3.1 innings with zero earned runs in a winning effort.
Although the awards came out before Iowa State’s game against Iowa on Tuesday, Schurman does not appear to be slowing down. She pitched 4.2 innings in the win over the Hawkeyes. She only gave up two runs and had one of the most important plays in the game when she turned a double play to end the sixth inning.
Head coach Jamie Pinkerton was proud of the effort and reflected on the success from this weekend.
“It’s not very often a team sweeps it, sans [Oklahoma] or Texas in the past few years,” Pinkerton said. “Usually once or twice a year, we’ll get one of them, but it just tells you what the Big 12 thinks of what we did in Stillwater this week. We played extremely well.”
