No. 11 seed Iowa State lost 4-2 to No. 14 seed Colorado on Wednesday night. The first-round loss eliminated the Cyclones from the Big 12 Tournament.
Iowa State is now 6-21 versus the Buffaloes all-time. This was also the second match between the two schools this season, with Iowa State and Colorado splitting the season series 1-1.
In the Cyclones’ previous match against the Buffaloes, they won a close match 4-3. But on Wednesday night, it wasn’t in the cards for Iowa State.
Despite the final score, it was Iowa State that kicked off the evening action. The new No. 80-ranked doubles pairing of senior Anna Supapitch Kuearum and freshman Cristina Ramos Sierra beat Ema Bubalo and Anya Nelson 6-2 on court No. 1.
Freshman Suzanie Pretorius and sophomore Valeska San Martin Ramirez notched the second doubles win for Iowa State to clinch the doubles point. They dispatched Betina Tokac and Pia Rebec 6-3 on court No. 3.
With a 1-0 lead, Cyclone freshman Julia Camblor added fuel to the fire. Camblor topped Tokac 6-0, 6-2 on court No. 2.
After being down 2-0, Nelson gave Colorado a jolt of life. She beat Ramirez 6-2, 7-5 on court No. 6 for Colorado’s first singles win of the night. Following Nelson’s win, the Buffaloes would go on to win three straight singles matches en route to their comeback.
Rebec then opened the floodgates for Colorado after she beat Ramos Sierra 7-6, 6-2 on court No. 4.
Bubalo got the third singles win of the match. She defeated freshman Mari Paz Alberto Vilar 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 on court No. 3.
Mila Stanojevic sealed the comeback victory for Colorado. Stanojevic beat Kuearum 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 on court No. 1 for the Buffaloes’ fourth straight singles win.
Iowa State will now wait and see if it will receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
