This weekend the Iowa State men’s and women’s track teams are competing at one of the most prestigious meets on their schedule, the 115th Drake Relays. Here is a look back at days one and two.
Decathlon in the spotlight on day one
Wednesday was all about the decathlon for the Cyclone men, as eight of 15 decathlon events placed in the top 10.
Senior Thai Thompson went three for three in top-10 finishes, placing fourth in the 100-meter dash, where he ran a 10.81. In the long jump, he placed fifth and jumped 23-9 ½ and in the shot put he placed ninth, where he threw 38-7.
Freshman Tristan Rheingans couldn’t find the top 10 in his five events, as his best finish was 11th in the long jump, where he jumped 20-9. In the high jump, he placed 13th, jumped 5-9 ¾ and set a new PR.
Rheingans placed 14th in the 400-meter dash, where he ran a 50.93. In the shot put, he placed 15th with a throw of 36-4 and in the 100-meter dash, he placed 16th with a time of 11.34.
Freshman Chase Lathrop went four for five in top 10 finishes and set two new PRs. One of those two came in the 100-meter dash, where he placed fifth and ran a 10.83 while the other came in the shot put, where he threw 43-2 ¼ and placed fifth. In the long jump he placed 10th, where he jumped 21-7 ¼ and in the high jump he went for 6-2 ¼ to place eighth.
Sophomore Cooper Spurgeon only competed in two of the five events. In the shot put, he placed sixth with a throw of 42-11 ½ and in the 400-meter dash, he placed 13th and ran a 50.88.
Connell grasps gold in 3,000-meter steeplechase
Junior Kiki Connell took advantage of a golden opportunity to advance up the school’s leaderboard, as she ran a PR of 10:16.83 that won the race and would jump her to fifth in school history in the event. Freshman Sheridan Wheeler wasn’t far behind, as she ran a 10:21.67 and placed third.
Decathlon wraps up, women’s distance unleashed on day two
In day two of the decathlon, Lathrop found himself finishing in the top 10 with a PR of 6,767 points across the 10 events. Despite no top-10 finishes on day one for Rheingans, he placed ninth overall with a score of 6,246.
Lathrop found two PRs to start the day. The first in the 110-meter hurdles, where he ran a 16.24 and placed 12th and the second in the discus where he threw 128-4 and placed sixth.
His other top 10 finish came in the pole vault, placing ninth with a height of 13-3 ½. In the javelin and 1,500-meter run, Lathrop placed 12th in both, where he first threw 149-6 and then capped the decathlon with a PR of 5:05.95.
Rheingans found his first top-10 finish in the 110-meter hurdles, where he placed eighth, and ran a 15.52. Following up in the discus, he found a PR of 111-8 and placed 12th.
He followed that up with an 11th place finish in the pole vault with a height of 11-11 ¾. In the javelin, Rheingans placed 15th with a throw of 140-1 and in the 1,500-meter run he placed 11th with a time of 5:02.92.
Spurgeon fired off two PRs in the discus and 1,500-meter run. He threw a distance of 116-10 and later ran a 5:12.01. In the 110-meter hurdles, he placed 12th, where he ran a 16.13.
Back-to-back top-10 finishes in the pole vault and javelin later awaited Spurgeon. In the pole vault, he placed ninth with a height of 13-11 ¼ and he threw a distance of 164-9 in the javelin, where he placed seventh.
In the unseeded women’s 1,500-meter run, no Cyclones cracked the top 10. Redshirt freshman Mya Trober led the Cyclone quartet, as she placed 13th and ran a 4:30.87.
Freshmen Josie Baker and Wheeler placed 17th and 22nd, as Baker ran a 4:34.10 and Wheeler ran a 4:39.82. Redshirt freshman Aspen Fulbright capped the Cyclone quartet as she placed 23rd and ran a 4:43.40.
In the unseeded 800-meter run, freshman Camryn Hubbard placed sixth in the women’s race and ran to a PR of 2:09.78. On the men’s side, senior Tyler Carreon and freshman Jacoby Harmon placed 14th and 15th, where Carreon ran a 1:51.46 and Harmon ran a 1:51.60.
Freshman Betty Kipkore ran to a second place finish in the women’s open 5,000-meter run with a time of 16:05.59, while junior Taylor Briggs fought her way to a sixth place finish in the women’s 10,000-meter invite, where she ran a 35:18.62.
