The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a tornado watch for Story County and the surrounding area, in effect from 5 p.m. to midnight.
According to the Storm Prediction Center (SPC), a few tornadoes are likely in the area, with the possibility of being intense.
Additionally, scattered large hail and isolated very large hail up to three inches in diameter (apple-sized) are likely. Scattered damaging winds with some gusts over 75 mph are also possible.
“Supercells are expected to continue developing this evening while posing a threat for very large hail up to two to three inches in diameter,” according to the SPC. “A few tornadoes also appear likely, with a couple of strong tornadoes possible with any sustained supercell. Scattered severe/damaging winds with peak gusts to 65-75 mph may also occur.”
According to the NWS, a tornado watch is issued when conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms and tornadoes. Persons in and surrounding the watch area should look out for later statements and possible warnings.
As of the time of publication, Ames has been placed in a level three out of five risk level, meaning “numerous severe storms possible.”
