After finals finish up and the spring semester ends, a lot of students at Iowa State go back home, but for the ones that don’t, there are opportunities to live in the dorms during the summer months.
Chad Bauman, marketing specialist for the residence halls, stated in an email interview that Buchanan Hall is open for students to live in for the summer.
“It will cost $1,474 for a double suite and $1,692 for a single suite to live in Buchanan this summer,” Bauman stated.
Bauman also said students don’t have to pay to live in for the full summer; they can pay for a single class session.
“A student can live with us for the full summer or just part of it if they plan on taking classes in just one of the summer sessions,” Bauman stated.
Bauman stated that all of the resources available over the school year are also available over the summer.
“We have the same amenities in the summer that we offer during the academic year, with the convenience of living close to everything you need to succeed as a student,” Bauman stated. “There’s professional staff on hand 24/7 that serve as a great resource for the students; the Hall Director and RAs develop programming for the students to help build community.”
“Other than our student population across campus being lower, there really isn’t much difference between the environment between summer and academic year housing,” Bauman stated.
Reid May, a senior in kinesiology and health, worked as an RA during the summer last year. He said living on campus over the summer is a lot more laid-back than during the academic year.
“It is a laid-back atmosphere, there were only about 40 students in the dorm I was working in,” May said. “It was a lot less stressful than during the spring and fall semesters just because of the small amount of students around campus.”
May said the dorms still put on events during the summers as well.
“We still had a couple of events for students but they were much more laid-back than during the school year,” May said.
Samarth Sontate, a freshman in aerospace engineering, said he is excited for what his first summer living on campus will bring.
“I am excited for it (summer living). It’s going to be really nice out, but since it’s a campus town there’s not going to be a lot of people,” Sontate said. “I am still excited.”
Sontate said he is going to work and recover from the academic year over the summer.
“I’m probably going to work a lot, find a full time job,” Sontate said. “I am also going to sleep a lot. It was a long semester, so I am going to get some good sleep. I also want to explore a lot of Ames. I haven’t explored a lot of Ames so I’ll just go around and look at everything.”
