Reiman Gardens’ Director of Entomology, Nathan Brockman, is hosting Nature with Nathan on every second Tuesday of the next couple months. The series is being presented in honor of the gardens’ 30 year anniversary.
His upcoming lecture on Tuesday is titled “Butterflies from Around the World” and will be held from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. According to the Reiman Gardens’ event website, Brockman’s lecture “will lead you on a fascinating journey through the world of remarkable insects.”
Brockman is a former Iowa State student and has been with Reiman Gardens for the last 23 years. He wanted to provide this series of lectures on topics that were requested throughout his time working at Reiman Gardens.
The dates and topics for the upcoming Tuesday lectures are:
- June 10: Butterflies from Around the World
- July 8: Aquatic Insects in Ponds and Water Gardens
- August 12: Butterfly Conservation Near and Far
- September 9: Fascinating Insects
The lectures are for anyone in the community who is looking to learn a little more about entomology from Brockman’s wealth of stories, facts and passion for the subject.
“Each talk in the series is meant to be both educational and entertaining,” Brockman said. “Whether you’re an insect enthusiast or just a little curious, there’s always something new to discover—and maybe even something that will make you see the natural world a bit differently.”
The other events will also be in the 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. timeslot and hosted at Reiman Gardens. Brockman shared that his lectures are open to all ages.
“The talks are primarily designed with adults in mind, but curious kids are absolutely welcome,” Brockman said. “If a young person is interested in the topic, there’s no reason they wouldn’t enjoy it too.”
At the end of the lecture, Brockman will be open to questions from anyone in the audience, even if they are not related to the topic of the day.
