Editor’s Note: Sen. Brody Kuhse also holds a position as an academics reporter at the Iowa State Daily.
The Student Government honored Jack Trice Remembrance Day during its Wednesday meeting, 102 years after Jack Trice’s death.
On Oct. 8, 1923, Jack Trice died after suffering injuries during his first collegiate football game playing for Iowa State. The bill resolving this day of remembrance was passed with unanimous consent during the Senate meeting.
“We’re going to resolve that Oct. 8 of each year following this is [known] as Jack Trice Remembrance Day,” Sen. Brody Kuhse, a sophomore majoring in mechanical engineering, said. “This is to honor the legacy of John Trice; his nickname was actually Jack… this resolution recognizes the effort of everything that has happened since the killing or the injuries, and the reflections that students, faculty, administrators and members of the community have felt since then.”
This resolution was presented in conjunction with an event put on by the Student Government the same day, also called Jack Trice Remembrance Day.
The Senate has also approved $443.40 in funding in a 19-0-0 roll call vote for a Constitutional Convention on Oct. 16. This event dedicates time for students to weigh in on changes to the Student Government Constitution.
“In the Rules Committee, we noticed that there were some changes we wanted to make, but we wanted to make it open for all students at Iowa State University to propose changes to this constitution, and so we decided to do an event for it,” Speaker Josie Pursley, a senior majoring in political science, said.
The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. in room 3580 at the Memorial Union, and food will be available.
In conjunction with a bill passed during the Sept. 24 Senate meeting regarding regular allocation shortfalls, $5,575.38 was transferred from the Special Projects account to the Regular Allocations account in a 19-0-0 roll call vote.
When annual allocations were configured last year, a few buttons were missed, causing some accounts to not get the funding they requested. During the meeting, Finance Director Noah Kammeyer, a senior majoring in political science, emphasized that the money being transferred is to finance clubs that had already been approved for funding.
Two members of the Student Government graced the lectern during the open forum during the meeting Wednesday.
Graduate Senator Muhammad Azhan left the meeting after sharing that he will no longer be part of the Student Government.
“It’s almost two, three years in student government, and now the work schedule is getting crazy for me, so I decided to step down from this position, because I’m also the president of the GPSS,” Azhan said.
Ren Moyer, a junior majoring in computer engineering and the director of the Health and Wellness Committee, also announced that he is unable to balance his role and be a full-time student.
“It is with a heavy heart that I tell you all I am resigning as director of Health and Wellness,” Moyer said. “This is because my academic load is a lot more than I thought it would’ve been at the beginning of the semester. But I still love the work I do, I’m still going to be working on it, just on my time on the side… it’s been an honor working with you guys. I love the people. I love the community here.”
