The Vietnamese Student Association (VSA) hosted a showing of “Betting with Ghost”, a comedy horror movie, last Friday.
“Betting With Ghost”, or “Lam Giau Voi Ma”, is about a gambling addict, a man named Tran Vahn Lahn, who meets the ghost of a woman named Le Thi Na. In exchange for helping Le Thi Na find her lost child, she offered to help Lahn raises ₫30 million to clear his gambling debt.
There are multiple twists and turns in the film, giving its already interesting mix of comedy and horror even more tonal shifts.
The movie takes place in an unnamed Vietnamese city, featuring an all Asian cast. They represent the working, middle and wealthy classes, helping ground the supernatural elements of the comedy/horror/drama.
The showing was enjoyed by both old and new members of VSA. Student members of the Vietnamese Student Association shared how they felt about the movie.
Megan Burket, a junior in graphic design, felt that it was different from what they imagined.
“I was a little bit concerned. For a horror movie, it’s like a comedy horror. I was a little bit nervous about it, because I don’t really like horror movies, but this one was something I could see myself watching the rest of,” Burket said. “It draws you in when there’s super comedic moments that are just out of pocket.”
Tessa Burkle, a sophomore in dietetics, thinks that the comedy of the movie makes it comparable to American movies like “Scary Movie”. She also thinks the best part of the movie is the beginning when the haunting starts.
“My favorite part of the movie was actually in the beginning…when he first meets the ghost, and he’s like being quote-unquote haunted,” Burkle said. “The vibe was really funny…this lady just popped around right in front of him, just knocked him out.”
The students also shared how they felt it connected to their Asian heritage.
Nick Ramsey, a junior in actuarial science and a member of VSA for the last year, especially feels a connection to the community these events bring out.
“Just getting the ability to experience this and be around people that are from similar backgrounds, it’s a good time.”
