The Student Union Board (SUB) hosted an International Movie Night for the movie “Past Lives” Wednesday.
The movie is a romantic drama. It follows two friends Nora and Hae, who grew up as childhood friends from South Korea. They were separated when Nora and her family moved to Canada. Years go by, and they reconnect in New York City. Viewers follow their journey of navigating their feelings, identity and love.
This event was open to all students at Iowa State. Nattaporn Khajornklin, a student in attendance at International Movie Night, gave her review on the film.
“I think it’s a really sad movie,” Khajornklin said. “The ending was very unexpected. It was really twisted.”
The SUB runs not only movie nights but a variety of events throughout the year. They are a student-led organization.
Multicultural and Awareness Co-Director Tanisha Magikar discussed international movie night and other events she is a part of in the Student Union Board.
“We usually have movie nights every Thursday to Sunday here at Carver 101,” Magikar said. “We have events once or twice a week. Our events range from comedy nights, open mic nights and low-cost concerts.”
International Movie Night creates an environment for students to bond with films and experience different cultures through movies. Varunavi Prasad, Multicultural and Awareness Coordinator for SUB, talked about the inspiration behind International Movie Night.
“For the International Movie Night, we want to show movies from other cultures and different places,” Prasad said. “We want to bring in that culture to bring culture to Iowa State.”
The Student Union Board will continue to show movies all semester. These movies all showcase global stories and give students an opportunity to explore different cultures through film.
