Canvas and Snapchat are among a list of hundreds of websites currently affected by an Amazon Web Services (AWS) outage.
The outage, which began around 2:11 a.m. CDT, primarily affects the US-EAST-1 region, which is based in Virginia.
According to the AWS Health Dashboard, the severity of the issue has been labeled “degraded.”
The most recent update at the time of publication, from 12:03 p.m., stated mitigation steps are continuing to be implemented in recovery of AWS services. These include recovering the Lambda system, validating a fix to EC2 network failures and recovering network connectivity. A new update is expected by 12:45 p.m.
Some additional platforms affected include Starbucks, Venmo, Zoom, Amazon and Ring.
The US-EAST-1 region is the oldest and largest region of AWS, with services being established as early as 2006. The origin of the problem was found in the EC2 internal network.
According to an update from Iowa State’s Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT), “We do not currently have updates from Instructure on the expected restoration of Canvas operations.”
