After witnessing the fourth consecutive rendition of the Golden State Warriors versus the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA Finals, a lot of talk has centered around the concept of the sports superteam.

Superteams are comprised of multiple world class talents on the same team, creating a dominance within the sport.

This is usually most prominent in national teams in every sport.

A young, yet extremely talented, French soccer team are the World Cup champions. The New Zealand “All Blacks” rugby team has been at the top of the sport for nearly a century.

However, not all superteams are national teams.

Club team rosters are always changing. Money is a significant factor in this era of sports, and wealthy owners give their teams lots of it to use. A past year’s all-star team could all play for the same club team in the next year.

While superteams can be present in any sport, they most commonly occur in basketball. Basketball presents 5-on-5 play, while American football and soccer offer 11-on-11 and baseball has 9-on-9. It is easier for a single player to change the course of the game in basketball than in other sports, where depth is usually of the utmost importance.

There is a reason LeBron James’ return to Cleveland immediately brought them winning results.

Steph Curry and Kevin Durant, two of the current top five basketball players in the world, both play for the Warriors. James is leaving Cleveland again, this time for the Los Angeles Lakers. Cristiano Ronaldo is on his way to Juventus to buff up the already dominant Italian soccer club.

The New York Yankees won five World Series in six years in the 1990s. Bayern Munich has won six consecutive Bundesliga titles and counting. The Cavaliers and Warriors have met in the last four NBA Finals. In 17 years, the New England Patriots have 15 division titles, 12 AFC championship appearances, seven Super Bowl appearances, and five Super Bowl wins.

Many fans raise the question: is the concept of the superteam good or bad for sports?

The goal of a franchise is to win and make money, and to do that they pay the best players top dollar. Once the best players have enough money, their new motivation centers around winning. After all, they don’t want to be known as a perennial failure who couldn’t step up on the biggest stage.

So, they all want to come together and enjoy win after win.

Overall, fans love the entertainment factor that comes with elite caliber players playing side by side. Fans usually are of one of two mindsets: they want to watch the best teams dominate, or they want to watch the best teams lose. Either way, it makes for great entertainment.

Those who say they won’t watch Golden State play anymore are lying. With a team like theirs, it’s almost impossible for a sports fan not to be in the know when it comes to their accomplishments and endeavors. In fact, the fiery trades and exciting teams that were created before the 2017-2018 NBA season immediately yielded results in the form of TV ratings and viewership.

The regular season viewership rose to a four-year high, as viewership went up 8 percent from 2016-17 at 1.28 million average viewers per game.

One player can also have a huge influence on ratings. For example, James attracted increased viewership the last time he moved elsewhere. Time will tell what this year will bring as he moves away to Los Angeles, but his star factor combined with the huge market that the Lakers boast will mean money.

Money is power in sports, and a team holding vaults of cash will be more likely to cash in on the superstars.

However, teams may not be able to splurge on players even when they have the money. The NFL, MLS, and NHL have a hard salary cap in effect, meaning that teams may not exceed a certain amount to pay their players’ salaries. Additionally, the MLB has a luxury tax in effect imposing extra charges on a side for spending too much money.

The NBA has a soft salary cap, but there are many exceptions to it. This flexibility is another reason why superteams are more prevalent in basketball than other sports.

It’s truly amazing to witness these incredible dynasties in sports, and it is well known that not all these records come without challenges. Having this talent on one team means being able to watch these greats overcome huge upsets, stage unreal comebacks and create memorable plays together.

There’s a reason why these teams are labeled as super. People will love them and people will hate them, but the bottom line is that people will watch them.
