Seven Big 12 players had their names called by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum Thursday night, starting a new chapter of their careers.

The night was filled with drama, as six of the top 16 picks in the draft had their draft rights traded before the draft was done.

Festivities began when Dallas traded the fifth pick to Atlanta for the rights to third pick Luka Doncic. The Hawks used the fifth pick to select Oklahoma freshman Trae Young. Young led the NCAA in points and assists last season.

Immediately after, the second Big 12 player was off the board. Texas center Mohamed Bamba was drafted by the Magic with the sixth pick. The 7-foot center has a ludicrous 7-foot-10 wingspan.

Texas Tech’s Zhaire Smith was the third (and final) first-round pick for the Big 12, initially being drafted 16th by the Suns before being traded to the Sixers for the rights to 10th pick Mikal Bridges. The pick was the bookend to an incredible rise from three-star recruit to first-round draft pick, and a cruel switch of fates for Philly native Bridges.

In the second round, two West Virginia and two Kansas players were selected.

Jevon Carter went with the 32nd pick to the Memphis Grizzlies, which is a nearly perfect fit. Carter fits the Memphis mentality perfectly, and he’s a dogged defender.

Two picks later, Devontae Graham went to Charlotte with the 34th pick. Graham was a solid point guard at Kansas, scoring in bunches and running the Jayhawks’ offense with aplomb.

Svi Mykhailiuk was picked by the Lakers with the 48th pick. The four-year player at Kansas is only 20 and a great shooter, but will have to overcome a disappointing wingspan to make it long-term in the NBA.

The final Big 12 pick of the draft was Devon Hall. The former Mountaineer was drafted by Oklahoma City with the 53rd pick. Hall showcases strong shooting skills and played in a hectic defensive system at West Virginia. As a late second rounder, it will be interesting to see if he can stick with the Thunder.

Some notable Big 12 players to go undrafted were TCU forward Kenrich Williams, Kansas guard Malik Newman, Texas Tech guard Keenan Evans and former Iowa State guard Donovan Jackson.

Jackson had been worked out by a couple of NBA teams, but instead might look for a Summer League invite, two-way contract or an overseas deal.
