After being swept by Division II opponent Wayne State, Iowa State was able to beat Drake in the afternoon match 3-0.

Prior to Iowa State playing Drake, Drake defeated Wayne State by winning all three sets.

During the match, Iowa State experimented with several different lineups including different players at the libero position and different lineups on the front row.

At libero, Hali Hillegas, who was last year’s Big 12 Libero of the Year, only played one set at libero. The other two sets, Hillegas played back row. In her place was sophomore Izzy Enna.

On the front row, Grace Lazard, Josie Herbst and Hannah Bailey started with Jess Schaben, who is listed as an outside hitter, in the back row.

Lazard, who only played the last two sets of the first game, started all three sets for the Cyclones. Lazard started the first two sets at middle blocker before moving over to outside hitter.

Early in the first set, Lazard notched a block and kill to put Iowa State ahead 3-1.

Iowa State won the first set 25-21.

After that first set, Iowa State took the second with a score of 25-14.

During that set, Iowa State’s offense hummed as sophomore setter Piper Mauck was able to find hitters including Lazard, Bailey, Herbst and Schaben. The hitters in turn found sharp angles for kills and powered their shots through Drake’s blockers.

Mauck also contributed defensively to block one of Drake’s shots to extend Iowa State’s lead to 12-6.

In the third and final set, Iowa State won with a score of 25-12.

During the third set, middle blocker Meegan Hart played significant minutes during the set and put Iowa State up early. Hart secured five straight aces to jump the Cyclones out to an 8-2 lead.

Iowa State’s next spring season game will be at Iowa.
