Former Iowa State coach Earle Bruce dies at age 87

Former Iowa State football coach Earle Bruce died Friday at the age of 87, according to an Iowa State athletics department press release. 

Bruce was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2017 and had a stroke at the age of 84. He had been dealing with some impaired speech during that time as well. 

Bruce coached at Iowa State from 1973-78 with a 36-32 overall record. Along with the record, he was a two-time Big Eight Conference Coach of the Year in 1976 and 1977. 

From 1979-87, Bruce coached at Ohio State and won the Big Ten Conference four times. He came back to Iowa in 1988 to coach at the University of Northern Iowa for one season and coached the Iowa Barnstormers, the Arena Football League, in 2003. 

He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2002 after having a 154-90-2 overall record in his 21 seasons as a college football coach.
