The number of competitors was small, but the results were significant.

After plenty of action and several top 10 finishes on Friday at the Stanford Invitational and Florida Relays, the Iowa State women’s track team didn’t have nearly as many athletes competing on Saturday. In fact, the Cyclones didn’t have anyone competing at Stanford and only had four competitors at Florida.

However, those that did compete certainly showed out.

After a second-place finish in the long jump on Friday, Jhoanmy Luque took home first in the triple jump and set a new PR in the process.

After being stuck behind Florida’s Yanis David for most of the event, Luque set her outdoor personal record with a best leap of 44-9 ½, which gave Luque current number one ranking in all of Division I this season.

The leap continued what has been an excellent season for Luque thus far, and is the second consecutive meet in which she’s set a personal record. Luque didn’t compete in the Tulsa Duels, but her jump of 44-10 ¾ at the NCAA Indoor Championships on March 10 was a personal best.

Speaking of continuing excellent seasons, Essence Henderson had another solid meet with her performance today in the shot put. Henderson finished in third place with a throw of 49-9 ¼, which was good enough to land the freshman at seventh in Iowa State history in the event.

The Cyclones also got a pair of top-15 finishes from their two other competitors today. Freshman Keiara Williams placed 14th in the shot put today with a throw of 45-1 ½, while fellow freshman Jalaiya Bartley earned 15th place in the triple jump with a leap of 39-4 ½.

Both the women’s and men’s track teams will be in action again next weekend at the Sun Angel Classic in Tempe, Arizona. Both meets will last all day on April 6 and 7.
