The Senior Day upset that Emily Durr and Claire Ricketts had hoped for didn’t materialize on Saturday afternoon as No. 6 Texas beat the Cyclones 72-59.

The first quarter carried on with the theme of recent Iowa State home games. The Cyclones and Longhorns both got off to hot starts, and both team ended the first quarter shooting 50 percent or better from the floor. Texas led 21-17 after the first.

The Longhorns used a 10-0 run early in the second to open up a 31-17 lead. As the quarter wore on, Iowa State crept back within eight, but couldn’t keep it within 10 at the break. A last-second layup gave the Longhorns a 41-29 halftime advantage.

Durr was in foul trouble for the majority of the game, and had to sit with three fouls early in the second half. The Longhorns were able to keep their lead at 13-to-15 points for most of the third quarter, until a late 8-0 Cyclones run brought Iowa State within 52-45 with one quarter remaining.

Iowa State shot 38.7 percent from the floor on the game, and only hit four 3-pointers on 22 attempts.

The Cyclones did just enough to keep themselves in the game, though, and with less than five minutes to play the score was 62-53 in favor of the Longhorns. For every Cyclones basket, though, Texas had an answer.

The Longhorns were led by guard Ariel Atkins, who finished with 18 points and three rebounds. Junior guard Bridget Carleton led the Cyclones with 23 points on 9-of-24 shooting.

Up next for the Cyclones is a trip to Kansas for the regular-season finale. Tip-off from Lawrence, Kansas, is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 27.It
