Iowa State wrestling defeated by Northern Iowa

Iowa State pulled off a tight win over Fresno State on Friday night. Twenty-four hours later, the Cyclones competed against the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

The Cyclones failed to register back-to-back wins, losing 31-7 to UNI.

Iowa State’s night kicked off in rough fashion. Freshman 125-pounder Sinjin Briggs was pinned in 0:59 by Jacob Schwarm, the No. 20 125-pounder according to Intermat.

Redshirt sophomore 133-pounder Markus Simmons helped the Cyclones bounce back. Simmons cruised to a 14-0 major decision over Jack Wagner.

Still nursing a knee injury, redshirt freshman 141-pounder Ian Parker sat out against UNI. Iowa State forfeited the weight, giving UNI a 12-4 lead.

At 149-pounds, UNI extended its lead to 15-4. UNI’s No. 7 Max Thomsen knocked off No. 19 Jarrett Degen in a 7-5 decision.

UNI’s momentum carried into the 157-pound match. Logan Ryan edged out redshirt sophomore Chase Straw, 3-1.

Iowa State trailed 18-4 at intermission.

After intermission, redshirt junior 165-pounder Skyler St. John put Iowa State back in the win column. St. John defeated Daniel Kelly 7-4, cutting UNI’s lead to 18-7.

In the 174-pound match, UNI’s No. 7 Taylor Lujan halted Iowa State’s momentum, defeating Danny Bush 17-6. The Panthers pushed their lead to 22-7.

UNI put the dual out of reach after the 184-pound match. No. 10 Drew Foster narrowly beat Dane Pestano, 6-4.

After UNI secured the win, the Panthers piled on. No. 19 197-pounder Jacob Holschlag snagged a 2-0 win over redshirt freshman Sam Colbray. The Panthers led 28-7.

A tough dual for the Cyclones concluded with a loss at heavyweight. Redshirt junior Marcus Harrington fell to Carter Isley, 4-3.
