Iowa State left with only three wrestlers after first day of Cliff Keen Invitational

Iowa State wrestling faced its toughest competition of the year as the team participated in the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. The results of the first day are as all but three wrestlers were bounced from the invitational.

Iowa State did not travel a wrestler at 165 due to knee injuries to both Skyler St. John and Logan Breitenbach. 

125-pounds

In Jakob Allison’s first match, he lost a 4-2 decision to Rayvon Foley from Michigan State.

Allison then lost a 7-2 decision to Vladyslav Kazakov from Nebraska-Kearney. The defeat marked Allison’s final match of the weekend.

133-pounds

After a bye in the first round, No. 10 Ian Parker won 7-3 over Isaac Jimenez of Air Force.

The following round Parker lost to No. 7 Josh Terao from American in a 9-2 decision.

Parker followed up that loss with another 6-3 loss to Purdue’s Ben Thornton. That loss ended Parkers run at the tourney.

141-pounds

Kanen Storr, Iowa State’s highest seeded wrestler at No. 8, won his first match 6-2 against Kizhan Clarke from American.

In the round of 32, Storr secured a win over No. 9 Mason Smith of Central Michigan in a 7-1 decision.

Storr then lost by fall in 2:04 to No. 1 Bryce Meredith from Wyoming. Storr will now have a chance to wrestle back for third place.

149-pounds

Also with a first round bye, No. 10 Jarrett Degen earned a 17-2 tech fall over Kenny Astle from Western Wyoming.

Degen then lost by tech fall to No. 7 Zander Wick from Wisconsin 22-7.

Degen bounced back and won by fall in 6:23 against Jacob Macalolooy from Columbia.

In his final match of the night, Degen faced NDSU’s Kyle Gliva and won 11-7.

157-pounds

Chase Straw, who had a first round bye, lost 11-5 to Taleb Rahmani from Pitt in his first action of the day.

Straw followed up that defeat with a 9-8 upset win with riding time over No. 7 seeded Justin Staudenmayer from Brown.

In his next match, Straw was pinned in 1:17 by Luke Weiland from Army, ending Straw’s time at the Cliff Keen.

174-pounds

Hank Swalla fell by fall in 6:15 to No. 4 Jadaen Bernstein from Navy in his first match.

Swalla then dropped his second and final match of the Invitational after he was pinned in 3:41 by Anthony Lombardi from Binghamton.

184-pounds

No. 5 Jordan Ellingwood of Central Michigan defeated Dane Pestano 6-4 in the first round.

In a bounce back match, Pestano earned 13-4 major decision over Michael Battista from Virginia.

Pestano was then bounced from the tourney with a 9-6 loss to Gregg Harvey from Pitt.

197-pounds

Following a first round bye, Sam Colbray lost 9-2 to Jacob Holschlag from UNI.

Colbray then lost to Stevie Cervantes from Navy in a 6-5 decision that eliminated Colbray from rest of the Invitational.

285-pounds

Marcus Harrington won a 11-1 major with 3:00 of riding time over Matt Wagner from Air Force.

The following match No. 6 Garrett Ryan from Columbia defeated Harrington 8-2.

Harrington then faced UNI’s Carter Isley, who he lost to at the Harold Nichols Cyclone Open, and won by a 3-2 decision.

In Harrington’s final match of the day, he faced No. 9 Dustin Dennison from Utah Valley and won 3-2.

Wrestling will continue tomorrow Saturday, Dec. 1, at 11 a.m.

Iowa State’s remaining wrestlers, Storr, Degen and Harrington, will hope to continue their run of success in a push to finish on the podium on the final day of the tournament.
