Drake squashes late comeback by Iowa State

On a night that almost seemed as if the Drake women’s basketball team was destined to win after the passing of Mr. Drake on Thursday, the Bulldogs did just that.

Drake outlasted the Cyclones 83-80 after leading for a majority of the game. After jumping to a three-point lead after the first quarter, Drake added seven more points to that lead at halftime. A clearly livid Bill Fennelly brought out a different Iowa State team for the second half.

Drake’s 10-point halftime lead lasted for the third quarter and a majority of the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs lead got all the way to 16 until the Cyclones cut it to three, before the Bulldogs pulled ahead again.

Then, in the fourth quarter, Iowa State finally completed the comeback and tied the game at 70 with just over five minutes to play in the game. The Cyclones extended their lead to four with 2:05 left.

Drake’s Maddie Monahan drilled a 3-pointer as she got fouled and made the and-1. From there on it was all Drake. The Bulldogs took the final lead of the game with 2.4 seconds left and prevented Iowa State from tying the game as Bridget Carleton’s last-second shot was blocked.

Emily Durr led the Cyclones with 21 points, while Bridget Carleton tacked on 19.
