Here is what you need to know about gun laws in Iowa

Following the recent shooting in Las Vegas on Oct. 1, 2017, and the recent arrest of an armed suspect in Friley Hall, here is what you need to know about Iowa gun laws, according to the National Rifle Association Institute of Legislative Action:

  • Citizens are allowed to buy and carry handguns.

  • Citizens are allowed to purchase and/or carry rifles and/or shotguns.

  • The registration of firearms and licensing of owners is not required in the state of Iowa.

No permit professional or nonprofessional can be issued to anyone:

  • Under 18 years old for a professional permit or anyone under 21 for the nonprofessional permit.

  • Who is addicted to alcohol.

  • Where probable cause exists that someone will use the weapon unlawfully.

  • Is convicted of a felony.

  • Is subject to a protective order or has been charged with a misdemeanor crime.

  • Is prohibited by federal law from shipping, transporting, possessing and receiving a firearm.

On Oct. 7, 2017, a 22-year-old was arrested after entering Friley Hall with a concealed handgun. Gun laws at Iowa State are as follows:

  • According to the Iowa State University Policy Library, Firearms and Other Weapons, which hasn’t been updated since 2008 states:

    • That Iowa State prohibits the possession and use of firearms and weapons on campus.

    • In order to be allowed a weapon on campus a student will have to go through an application process with the Office of Risk Management.

    • The only two departments at Iowa State that are authorized to use weapons are:

      • Law enforcement

      • Military science
