Iowa State pounds Akron, 41-14

Iowa State won its first road game of the season Saturday when it defeated Akron, 41-14.

The Cyclones initially struck on their second possession. Deshaunte Jones had a 43-yard catch-and-run to start the drive. The 93-yard drive ended with a seven-yard touchdown reception by Allen Lazard.

Iowa State scored on its final possession of the first quarter as well. The Cyclones drove 71 yards in just two and a half minutes. Mike Warren capped off the drive with his first touchdown of the season.

Iowa State started the second quarter with a 14-0 lead.

Akron scored thanks to a 45-yard touchdown pass with 7:13 remaining in the half to bring the score to 14-7.

After an eight-play, 57-yard drive, Garrett Owens nailed a 40-yard field goal to give Iowa State a 17-7 lead.

Akron fumbled on the ensuing drive and Iowa State took over in Akron territory. The Cyclones couldn’t capitalize, however, and settled for another 40-yard field goal.

Warren Ball scored on an 11-yard reception to bring the score to 20-14 at halftime.

Iowa State bounced back with an 80-yard touchdown drive that was capped off by a 46-yard bomb from Jacob Park to Marchie Murdock, giving Iowa State a 27-14 lead.

The Cyclones weren’t done. Joel Lanning picked off an Akron pass and three plays later, David Montgomery ran it into the endzone from nine yards out. Iowa State led 34-14 after Montgomery’s touchdown.

Jacob Park added a rushing touchdown of his own in the fourth quarter to seal the game. His 14-yard touchdown trot capped off a 69-yard, 6:09 drive and gave the Cyclones a 41-14 lead.
