League commissioner Derek Hannah passed around a hat full of six numbered ping pong balls to the six YMCA Capital City League (YCCL) head coaches.

Each coach would take a ping pong ball, and the number that it read on it was the pick they would get.

After a random draw, JayTee’s Apparel selected Nick Weiler-Babb as the first overall pick the 2017 YCCL Draft.

Due to the NCAA rule that only two college teammates can play on the same team, the draft is split into three rounds: Iowa State players, Drake players, and then everyone else.

The teams are all sponsored by local, central Iowa businesses. The 2017 sponsors include the Des Moines Lions Club, Doerfeld Promotions, Hannah Homes, Hinterland Music Festival, Jaytee’s Apparel and Sparta Waste Services.

Weiler-Babb nearly averaged a triple-double last season in the league. He averaged 20.4 points, 10.7 rebounds, and 9.9 assists per game.

While he didn’t win league MVP, it is not hard to see him contend for the award again this season.

In a surprise for the second pick, Lindell Wigginton, a five-star recruit, was selected to make his YCCL debut for the Des Moines Lions Club.

Wigginton averaged 16.4 points per game for Oak Hill Academy, a basketball prep school in Virginia.

Donovan Jackson was selected as the third pick in the Iowa State portion of the draft.

Jackson, who will be a senior in the upcoming season, will also make his debut in the league playing for the Hinterland Music Festival squad.

He shot 58.5% from behind the three-point line for the Cyclones in the final two months of the season.

Doerfeld Promotions drew the 4th pick of the draft and selected big-man Solomon Young.

Young doesn’t fill up the stat sheet, but he always makes his presence felt away from the ball.

In the 5th pick, Hannah Homes selected a central Iowa native in Michael Jacobson.

Fans of the league should be familiar with the transfer from Nebraska, as he played high school basketball at Waukee High School.

Rounding out the first round, Sparta Waste Services selected Cameron Lard, a former four-star recruit who redshirted last season for the Cyclones.

The Iowa State portion of the draft concluded after Marial Shayok, Jakolby Long, Terrance Lewis, Matt Tiby, Jeff Beverly and Jack Hutchinson were selected in the second round.

C.J. Rivers was selected as the first overall pick in the Drake round, and Wali Parks (DMACC) was the first pick in the open round.

The YCCL will kick off on Thursday, June 15 at the Valley Southwoods High School gym.
