Intra Uterine Device (IUD)

Pros

  • Typically 99 percent effective

  • Doesn’t need daily attention

  • Lessens menstrual flow and you don’t get a period as regularly

  • Cannot feel it — comfortable

  • Can be removed at any time

Cons

  • Does not protect against STIs

  • Can fall out/rare chance that it could puncture the uterus

  • Can lead to side-effects like infection, cramping, etc.

Birth Control Pills

Pros

  • Doesn’t interfere with sexual activity

  • Pretty effective if taken correctly

  • Makes menstrual cycle more regular and lighter

Cons

  • Room for human error/ have to take it every day at the same time

  • Does not protect against STIs

  • Need a prescription

  • Can cause weight gain

Hormonal Implant

Pros

  • 99 percent effective against pregnancy

  • May cause very light or even no menstrual cycle

  • Long term — up to three years and you do not need to worry about anything on a daily basis

Cons

  • Requires minor surgery in order to be inserted under the skin, as well as taken out when you are ready

  • Can cause some side-effects including depression weight gain and migraines

  • Can get infected fairly easily

NuvaRing

Pros

  • 98 percent effective

  • Stays in for three weeks at a time — do not need to focus on it every day

  • Fewer side-effects than most other forms

Cons

  • Weight gain

  • Can cause side-effects such as depression

  • Higher likelihood of infection
