The Iowa State women’s track and field team’s five-day wait to improve on its indoor season, which ended last Saturday with a tie for 47th at the NCAA Championships, is over.

After a quick off-season, or lack thereof, the Cyclones will usher in a new outdoor season at the Tulsa Duels on Friday and Saturday in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

While neither of Iowa State’s two athletes who qualified for the indoor championships, Jasmine Staebler and Jhoanmy Luque, were entered in the meet, the entries still include some notable names.

Junior Christabel Okeke, who finished her indoor season with a third-place finish in the weight throw at the Big 12 Championships, is expected to make her outdoor season debut this weekend in the hammer throw and shot put.

Sophomore Kelly Naumann is expected to make her first appearance in a meet this year after not competing during the indoor season.

She represented Team USA at the U-20 World Championships in the summer of 2016, finishing 26th in the steeplechase in 10 minutes and 45.90 seconds.

“It was a really great experience to be around people that are the best in the world and to meet people from other countries that you never visited,” Naumann said last fall about competing in the world championships. “I think it was a really, really good experience to boost my confidence.”

The distance runner from Tempe, Arizona, is entered in the 1,500-meter run at the Tulsa, Duels.

Fellow distance runner Bethanie Brown also is expected to make her outdoor season debut this weekend.

After missing the 2014-15 indoor and outdoor track and field seasons, the 2015 cross-country season and the 2015-16 indoor season, Brown hardly missed a beat in her return to competition during the 2016 outdoor season.

She took second in the 1,500 at the Jim Duncan Invitational, won the Drake Relays 5,000-meter run, finished fourth in the 5,000 at the Big 12 Championships and qualified for the NCAA West Preliminaries in the 5,000.

She also helped guide the Iowa State women’s cross-country team to a Big 12 Championship in the fall of 2016.

Despite a history of injuries and health issues, when she’s competed, she’s performed at a high level.

“Bethanie’s the kind of gal who will go to the well every single time,” Brown’s coach, Andrea Grove-McDonough, said during the cross-country season.

Brown is entered in the 800-meter run and 1,500-meter run at the Tulsa Duels.

Competition for the Cyclones will begin with field events at 1 p.m. Friday.
