As Steven Leath steps down from his position as president at Iowa State, he will move on to Auburn University to become its president. 

Here’s a look at the headlines he has made at Iowa State:

Leath announces new plan for reduced tuition for underprivileged Iowans

Sept. 25, 2012: One of his first plans as president was to create a program that offered nearly-free tuition for students who wouldn’t be able to afford an ISU degree. 

President Leath discontinues Veishea, retires name

Aug. 7, 2014: After months of meeting with a Veishea task force after the riots in spring 2014, President Leath announced they would discontinue Veishea and retire the name of the event.

Leath shares plans for growing enrollment

Sept. 10, 2015: In the fall of 2015, Iowa State broke the enrollment record for the seventh straight year. Containing 36,001 students, Leath shared his ideas to help increase staff, programs and scholarships. 

Administrators gave thoughts on Saturday protest, presidential candidate visits

Sept. 15, 2015: In the heat of campaign season, then-Republican presidential candidate and billionaire businessman Donald Trump was one of the multiple candidates to visit during the CyHawk game. President Leath escorted Trump throughout Jack Trice Stadium while peaceful protesters stood in the tailgating areas. After a woman tore one of the protester’s posters and photos were taken of Trump and Leath inside the stadium, tensions began to build on campus. 

Multicultural students present ideas to President Leath

Sept. 30, 2015: After the turmoil over the CyHawk poster ripping and Leath showing Trump around Jack Trice Stadium, 550 ISU students, faculty and staff went to the Great Hall of the Memorial Union. They addressed Leath, [former] Senior Vice President for Student Affairs Thomas Hill and [former] Dean of Students Pamela Anthony. The attendees told stories of race and discrimination, asking for change from administration. 

Leath brings mom’s T-shirt design to life

Oct. 12, 2015: Shortly after enrollment was announced to be 36,001, a Cyclone mom and ISU employee asked Leath to create a T-shirt for school spirit. The T-shirt read “I am the one” and was sold in the University Book Store. 

Leath addresses sexual assault, new position

Aug. 28, 2016: A campus climate survey had been released a year earlier that accounted for the sexual assaults happening on Iowa State’s campus. Leath explained that the university was embracing the Start By Believing campaign and instilling the SafeRide ISU app to have a better escort service. He presented the new sexual misconduct prevention position.

Leath on place use: ‘I regret all of this,’ am not trying to hide anything

Oct. 5, 2016: It was reported that Leath had used two university-owned planes for various reasons, and had an accident in one that caused $12,000 in damage. He addressed the controversy in this article. 

Big 12 Board of Directors unanimously decides against expansion

Oct. 17, 2016: After months of speculation that the Big 12 would expand, rumors were put to rest when the Board of Directors, which Leath is a part of, decided against it.

Leath sends campus-wide email regarding completion of audit

Dec. 13, 2016: The Board of Regents did an internal audit of the ISU Flight Services after Leath used the university plane to attend some business and personal events. He sent out a response to the conclusion.
