“Need to Know”- Testing Centers

There are four testing centers on campus; they all serve as places students can go for a test assigned to them that must be taken in the testing center:

  • Carver 60: Located on the west side of Central Campus, Carver 60 is one of the two testing centers located in Carver Hall.

  • Carver 250: Also located on the west side of campus, Carver 250 is also located in Carver Hall and was recently made a full-time testing center. This testing center was previously used for students in the math department, but it is now available to all students, according to Doug Bull, director of the ELO (Engineering, LAS Online) Testing Centers.

  • Durham 139: Located west of Parks Library towards the north side of campus, Durham 139 is located in the Durham Center which also houses the IT Solution Center, according to the Iowa State University website.

  • Gilman 2552: Just north of Parks Library, Gilman 2552 is located in Gilman Hall. Gilman was first used as a testing center location in 2004, Bull said.

According to Bull, testing centers have been used at Iowa State since 2003.

Depending on which testing center you visit, it can hold 51 to 72 students at a time. During midterm and finals week especially, there may be a wait to enter the testing center.

The MyState App and Iowa State University Testing Center website (https://www.testcenter.iastate.edu) are great resources to use in order to check the locations and wait time for each testing center.

“[Students] should be aware that we have a website where they can get a lot of information, and the MyState App also has [good] information,” Bull said.

In general, the testing centers are open Monday to Thursday from 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. On a normal week, the testing centers are closed on weekends unless it is finals week.

Students are given 30 minutes to finish their test after the doors lock, so because of this, it is recommended not to wait until the last minute to arrive at the testing center to take your test.

“Don’t wait until the last minute to take your test,” Bull said.

There are also jobs available in the testing centers as a proctor. If you are interested, you can visit the Iowa State University Testing Center website under the “student employment” tab.
