Three members of the Iowa State women’s basketball team received All-Big 12 honors Wednesday.

Sophomore Bridget Carleton was a unanimous First Team All-Big 12 selection, both senior Seanna Johnson and redshirt junior Jadda Buckley were named honorable mentions.

Carleton was one of 10 players to be selected to the first team and one of five to be selected unanimously. She averaged 15.6 points and 5.7 rebounds this season and finished fifth in the Big 12 in scoring.

“That’s a huge honor, I’m excited to be just even be in the conversation,” Carleton said. “But to actually be a part of the All-Big 12 team, it’s really a huge honor and I’m very humbled by it.

“As the season went on, I got more comfortable and I started playing better. I’m just thankful for all the coaches recognizing that.”

In a somewhat surprising outcome, Johnson was left off the first and second teams and tabbed as an an All-Big 12 honorable mention.

Johnson finished the season averaging 15.7 points per game, which ranks fourth in the Big 12, while also pulling in 8.3 rebounds per contest.

Johnson didn’t seem upset over the announcement and plans to use it as motivation as the team moves into tournament play.

“We still have games to play. This is still a little motivation, especially for me and Jadda [Buckley],” Johnson said. “It’s not over yet for us. The Big 12 Tournament is a chance for us to keep winning games. We’re going to go out there and play our hardest.”

Coach Bill Fennelly was also surprised by the decision, but stressed the importance Johnson has as a member of the team.

“I was disappointed,” Fennelly said. “She knows what she means to our staff, team, and fans. Her numbers speak for themselves.”

Jadda Buckley was the third Cyclone to receive a conference honor, also being named an All-Big 12 honorable mention. Buckley averaged 14.2 points per game and was third in the Big 12 in assists per game at 5.2.

“It’s always an honor when you get recognized by the Big 12,” Buckley said. “It’s one of the toughest conferences so being recognized is huge.

“I’m ecstatic, when your teammates are being mentioned and honored that’s a huge success for Iowa State and our program as a whole.”
