Entering the final stretch of the season, No. 10 Cyclone Hockey had to get past No. 19 Utah before postseason competition began.

Despite Utah sitting outside the top-10 rankings, coach Jason Fairman didn’t discount the Utes, saying, “they’re ranked 19 for a reason.” Regardless, Cyclone Hockey cruised past the Utes in a dominating fashion, beating them 6-2 Friday night and 7-0 Saturday night at the Ames/ISU Ice Arena.

On Friday night, six different Cyclones scored for the Cyclones and the team feasted the Utah goaltender with 51 shots.

Matt Goedeke got the start in net for Iowa State, but was only faced with 23 shots.

The Cyclones were also helped by the return of defenseman Jake Uglem and forward Tony Uglem from Atlmany, Kazakhstan, where they represented Team USA in the World University Games.

The Cyclones had a strong game, but still had some hiccups that Fairman didn’t like against Utah.

“We’ve had better moments,” Fairman said. ”We needed a win so there’s that. I don’t think we should’ve given up two goals so I’m not too pleased about that.”

Saturday night, the Cyclones executed a near perfect game, beating Utah 7-0.

Derek Moser got the start in net for game two but, similar to Friday night, didn’t see many shots as his team outshot the Utes 48-14.

“We definitely bounced back,” Trevor Sabo said. “I don’t think we played a complete 60 yesterday and we made it one of our goals to play a complete game.”

Cyclone Hockey saw a loud offensive game across the line-up but specifically with Sabo who had three goals and one assist.

Now with four extra points in the bag, the Cyclones will face tough competition next week against a No. 2 Ohio University. Cyclone Hockey also hopes to obtain the regular season Central States Collegiate Hockey League title.

“I think the guys should be sufficiently motivated [facing Ohio],” Fairman said. “I imagine it’s going to be playing for a banner.”

This time last year, the Cyclones had the chance to obtain the title, but couldn’t get the job done.

“Pretty exciting,” Sabo said. “We were there last year and in the last seconds we ended up losing it but it is exciting.”
