Recalling memories of a bygone era, Lisa Rock and her band, Close to You, recreated the melodic sounds of The Carpenters at Stephens Auditorium. For a crowd who grew up with The Carpenters’ music, it was a chance to relive an experience with the bestselling duo.

From the first notes, Lisa Rock’s smooth vocals brought joy to the crowd with her indistinguishable rendition of Karen Carpenter. Joining her was an incredible cast of musicians from the Chicago area.

As individuals, each musician brought their own style that resonated with the audience. Though restricted in musical expression by the nature of their cover band, each performer managed to project a captivating persona.

From the steady rhythm of Eric Engleson’s percussion, to the smooth woodwind sounds of the multi-talented Ian Letts, the band stole the show.

Despite Close to You’s obvious talent, The Carpenters’ music isn’t for everyone, and, save for a handful of hits that have survived to present day, their catalog has been lost to history.

Thankfully, there were few in the crowd who had not grown up alongside this iconic band, and for them, the concert was a nostalgic night to be remembered.
