After starting the season ranked No. 88, the Iowa State women’s track and field team will head into the NCAA indoor championships ranked in the top 20 for the first time since January 2015.

The rise in the rankings to No. 20 in the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association can be contributed to the breakout seasons of junior Jhoanmy Luque and sophomore Jasmine Staebler.

Luque recorded career-best performances in the long jump, 21-5 1/4, and triple jump, 44-9 1/2, at the Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championship on Friday and Saturday at Lied Recreation Athletic Center. The two marks both rank No. 4 in the country, according to DirectAthletics.

Staebler has the eighth fastest 800-meter run time in the country after running it in 2 minutes and 3.08 seconds at the Iowa State Classic on Feb. 11.

The team will find out who has qualified for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship later this week.

The meet will take place March 10 and 11 in College Station, Texas.
