LAWRENCE, Kansas — Phog Allen Fieldhouse didn’t live up to its stature on Saturday.

Iowa State (14-8, 6-4 Big 12) captured a glimpse at a victory down the stretch. And, unlike many before them, the Cyclones didn’t falter under the crushing Allen Fieldhouse pressure and beat No. 3 Kansas (20-3, 8-2 Big 12) 92-89 in overtime.

The Cyclones were swept up by their lack of size early on in the first half. After grabbing a rebound at the 19:02 mark, Iowa State didn’t snag another board until almost 17 minutes later — with 2:26 in the first half.

Kansas out-rebounded the Cyclones 19-3 in the first 20 minutes.

But the rebounds were the least of the Cyclones’ worries. The Jayhawks were scorching hot from the field, finishing the half with a 70-percent shooting clip (19-for-27). Iowa State just couldn’t keep up and trailed 52-38 at halftime.

Iowa State managed to claw back in the second half after a 15-point deficit and pulled within three points with just over seven minutes remaining.

And the Cyclones were lucky the good Deonte Burton showed up.

Burton drained back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Cyclones the lead with just over six minutes to play.

Iowa State kept up with Kansas and went into the final 30 seconds tied at 82. The Cyclones passed up a 2-for-1 opportunity and missed a floater. Kansas missed the game-winning shot to send the game into an overtime.

Overtime started a bit lethargic, with a turnover on both ends early on. But the Cyclones hit back-to-back shots to grab a five-point lead. The Jayhawks clawed back within one, but the Cyclones were able to hold them off.
