Cyclone Hockey swept the Robert Morris Eagles 3-2 in a thriller that went to a shootout Saturday night at the Ames/ISU Ice Arena.

The majority of the first period featured back-and-forth hockey with no extra curricular activity. Quality scoring opportunities were generated from both benches, but neither team was able to get past the respective goalies.

The second period was where all the action began.

In the opening minutes, Jake Arroyo wristed a shot from the blue line which snuck past Mallon to give the Cyclones a 1-0 lead.

Later in the frame, the frustration from Robert Morris started to creep in and both Chase Rey and Matt Cessna both were sent to the box for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Soon after, the Cyclones went on the man advantage after Josh Hart went to the box for tripping. The Cyclones showcased another great power play setup but couldn’t get one past Mallon.

The score remained 1-0 through the remainder of the period courtesy of goaltender Derek Moser, who came up huge with big-time saves.

In the final period of regulation, Robert Morris’s Ryan Martin scored 24 seconds into tie the game.

It didn’t take long for the Cyclones to answer back as Colton Kramer sniped the puck home on a pass from Jackson Graalum to make it 2-1.

And again, Robert Morris responded to tied the game at two goals a piece on a odd-man rush with 14:45 remaining in the game.

The Cyclones fell into penalty trouble late in the period when Brit Brothen was sent to box for cross-checking, but Cyclone Hockey stayed strong to kill it off.

The game was forced to head into overtime. The Cyclones had the majority of puck possession, but neither team was able to find the back of the net.

Eero Helanto had the game-winning goal for the Cyclones to sweep the series.
