Timeline of Bubu Palo’s sexual assault charges

May 18, 2012 – Alleged victim reports to police that she had been sexually assaulted by Spencer Cruise and Yempabou “Bubu” Palo. 

Sept. 7, 2012 – Bubu Palo and Spencer Cruise turn themselves in on accusations of sexual abuse.

Sept. 19, 2012 – Bubu Palo and Spencer Cruise plead not guilty to charges of sexual abuse.

Oct. 9, 2012 – Palo and Cruise’s attorneys challenge the ruling of second-degree assault.

Nov. 26, 2012 – Palo’s hearing gets rescheduled to Dec. 11.

Jan. 14, 2013 – Charges dropped against Bubu Palo and Spencer Cruise due to “receipt of additional evidence.”

Jan. 14, 2013 – ISU Athletics Department reinstates Palo to men’s basketball team.

Jan.  26, 2013 – Palo returns to the team against Kansas State. He played 17 of the last 19 games of the 2012-13 season.

April 24-25, 2013 – A case hearing was held at Iowa State before an administrative law judge.

May 22, 2013 – The judge found Palo not guilty, finding specifically that Iowa State did not have sufficient enough evidence. 

June 10-11, 2013 – The Iowa State Judicial Affairs Committee, the committee that investigates and oversees possible violations of the Student Code of Conduct at Iowa State, appealed the decision to President Steven Leath.

Aug. 30, 2013 – President Leath, five days after the start of the academic year, found Palo in violation of the Student Code of Conduct. Palo was indefinitely suspended from the basketball team.

Sept. 6, 2013 – Palo appealed to the Iowa Board of Regents. 

Dec. 4, 2013 – The Board of Regents denied Palo’s appeal.

Dec. 10 – Palo requested judicial review of the regents’ decision. He also requested that that he could play for the basketball team during the investigation into the decision.

Jan. 16, 2014 – District Court accepted Palo’s request to play on the team. The court also looked at 14 claims made against Palo by ISU and the Board of Regents, finding the claims without merit.

Jan. 22, 2014 – Iowa State requested that the court allow them to keep Palo off the team.

Jan. 24, 2014 – Iowa State’s request was denied, but Palo remained benched for the season. 

Aug. 21, 2014 – The District Court overturned the Board of Regent’s decision. The Board of Regents appealed the decision. 

July 9, 2015 – Iowa Court of Appeals dismissed the appeal, calling it a “moot point” since Palo was no longer a student at ISU.

Sept. 22, 2015 – Palo settled out of court with his accuser, who he sued for wrongful accusation.

April 13, 2016 – Palo files lawsuit against Iowa State University and the Board of Regents for what he says was mishandling of his case.
