The MTV movie awards took place Sunday, April 10, and were hosted by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Kevin Hart. This year’s awards marked the 25th year that they had been handed out, the winners picked by the people and the MTV committee.

One particular award that was handed out was the Generation Award, which was given to Will Smith. Before he was awarded, many big name men and women came up on stage and spoke about what Smith means to the business and how he helped transform it to what it is today. Queen Latifah and Halle Berry were two of the stars that spoke about Smith.

“Will gave me my first chance at acting by being in the cast of one of the episodes of ‘Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.’ There isn’t a more thoughtful or talented man in this town [and] there is no one that’s been more generous to me or our community. He was the first rapper to break into movies and become an international superstar. The king of huge blockbuster movies, and we all got to thank him for opening up that doo,r” Latifah said.

Berry spoke about how he had become a catalyst for the entertainment industry as well as giving him praise for his personality.

“Every performance you see his soul. Not only is it noticed in his family life but also his charity work as well. Will is also a trailblazer when it comes to diversity, proving that anyone regardless of race can be the greatest,” said Berry.

After Latifah and Berry spoke they showed a compilation video of some of Smith’s greatest films. In addition to the visuals from the various films they added some of his more famous quotes.

“Life isn’t about the amount of breaths you take, it’s the moments that take your breath away. Light up the darkness,” Smith said.

Smith then came on stage to receive the award and gave a short acceptance speech as well.

“I came out with my first album when I was 17. This June marks 30 years in this business for me. I’m dedicated to being a light in this world. I’m dedicated to light and to love, to combat the suffering in this world,” Smith said.
