Heading into Stillwater, Oklahoma, on Saturday, Iowa State was looking to snap a two-game losing streak — and it seemed like a perfect opportunity to so do.

However, it wasn’t as easy as many had hoped, especially without center Jameel McKay, who was suspended for the game on Friday night.

But in the end, No. 13 Iowa State (17-6, 6-4) survived an upset scare against Oklahoma State (11-12, 2-8), winning 64-59.

The first half was anything but ordinary for the Cyclones. Iowa State opened up 0-5 from the field, and trailed 5-0 at the first media timeout. Oklahoma State would extend their lead to 10-0 before Deonte Burton, who got his first career start Saturday, hit a three-pointer to get Iowa State on the board.

The Cyclones would go on to hit six more buckets from behind the arc. The Cowboys, though would stay right with the Cyclones, tying the game up 18-18 with just more than four minutes left in the half.

Burton and Georges Niang would each knock down a shot inside the lane, the Cyclones’ only points inside the arc in the half, before the end of the period. Heading into the locker room, Oklahoma State led 24-22.

The Cyclones opened up the second half completely different than the first, going on a 12-2 run to get things started. They would hover with a 10-point lead, until a quick 10-2 run by the Cowboys made it a two-point game with five-minutes left in the game.

The two were neck and neck until just more than 30 seconds left, when Niang was knocked in a layup to put the Cyclones up by three. Burton would the come up with a steal, forcing Oklahoma State to foul. Morris would make two free throws, sealing the five-point win.

Niang led the Cyclones with 18 points, 16 of which came in the second half. Both Morris and Matt Thomas were right behind with 16 points and six rebounds, and Burton finished with 11 points.
