Brase: Gadgets to Help Lose Weight

Haley Brase

Looking down at the scale, a sense of shame enters your body because the number it reads is not what you worked for.

In order to lose the excess fat, a person has to exercise and eat healthy. It is an over used remedy to obesity, but that is how to lose weight in a natural way.

I was always taught in health class and textbooks that healthy eating, exercising regularly and sleeping well are the keys to losing weight. As a college student, my eating habits are irregular. If running to and from each activity I have of the day counts as exercise, then that’s about all I get. As for sleep, well, what is sleep?

But thankfully there are gadgets designed to help people achieve that desired weight. These gadgets can be built into an everyday life for people of all lifestyles and every age. I am not saying to use these products alone and instantly expect to loose all the fat you want to, but the gadgets are little boosts to help you get to your desired weight loss.

The Prepd Pack is a lunch box which has containers measured to control portion consumption according to Gizmag. The containers are designed to carry all types of food, has leak control, is microwavable safe and can be frozen. The pack unfolds into a mat to serve as a table as you eat.

I think that something people who are struggling with obesity have a problem with is portion control. They guess what is an appropriate amount of food for their bodies, but it is usually twice the amount it should be.

A portion is how much you choose to consume, and a serving size is a specific amount of food or liquids. They can be the same or different, but in today’s world, portion sizes have grown. Tracking what you eat could be helpful especially if you are not eating food you prepared yourself. Food in restaurants are double and sometimes triple the recommended serving size, according to the American Heart Association.

Using the popularity of Smartphones, the company has made it easier to live a healthy lifestyle. There is an app a person can use to find recipes that fit in the specially made containers inside the pack to help manage food waste and portion control according to Gizmag. The app can track the nutritional value of the food you are eating.

A study done by Brian Wansick showed 44 percent more calories were consumed by the people who were given a larger bowl of popcorn than people who were given small bowls even if it did not taste good, reported by the American Heart Association.

The food a person eats is correlated to becoming obese, which is why products like this have come into existence. However they also speak to a larger issue. The World Health Organization estimates more people are overweight because the food that is consumed is high in sugar and saturated fat.

A study was done by Dr. Amanda Daley of the University of Birmingham in the UK showed that water consumption also plays a role in obesity. The study split up a group of 84 obese people into two groups for 12 weeks. One group was told to drink 16 ounces of water half an hour before their meals, and the other group was told to imagine that they were already full before they ate according to Time.

The group who drank water before their meals lost nine pounds, which is the same amount lost if the individual were a part of Weight Watchers, according to Dr. Daley. The water is supposed to make you feel fuller and reduce the amount of food a person eats.

Between drinking water for free or paying to be in Weight Watchers, I think the choice is obvious. Some people may not think water is desirable because it does not have a taste, and it does not give you an instant source of energy.

However, by drinking cold water, you are losing more calories. Known as resting energy expenditure, the body uses up calories to warm the water to its body temperature once consumed.

The Seed bottle helps people stay on track on their water intake. It tracks how much a person has already drank compared to their required intake. If you have not taken a drink of water in a while the lid will vibrate and a reminder is displayed on an LED Screen. If you tap the top of the lid, it will show the temperature of the water you are drinking, and if you twist the lid it will show your hydration progress.

If you do not sleep around seven to nine hours a night, you could gain weight. If you are having trouble falling asleep, late night snacking begins. Once you do fall asleep and if it is for a short period of time, you feel drowsy the next day. As a result, you make poor choices with what kinds of food you choose to consume. Getting a full night’s rest can help you function better and feel more energetic the next day.

The snooze-proof alarm is a pad lies on the ground beside your bed that acts as an alarm clock.  However, the alarm will only shut off if you stand on the pad. The alarm will not turn off until you stand on it for at least three seconds, but you can change it to make it longer to help wake yourself up more. You can personalize a morning greeting it will sound that can motivate you to start your day. The alarm will begin production in July.

No matter where you are – sitting down at home eating breakfast, at work doing paperwork or watching TV with the family – an exercise ball can replace any chair. It helps you burn six percent more calories than a regular chair.

Having used an exercise ball as a part of a study instead of a regular chair, I can see why you lose calories. I’m that type of person that likes to tap my fingers or move my legs when I’m focused on something, so the whole time I’m doing work I’m bouncing on the ball.  It helps with balance as well, as using your core so you would not fall backwards.

In addition to the other gadgets, a cold shoulder vest helps a person burn as much as 500 calories in two hours.

The vest has many small pockets of small freezer bags. A person loses weight wearing it because the coldness of the vest lowers your skin temperature making your body burn calories to stay warm as reported by Exam Health.

As I said earlier, these gadgets are helpful tools to use in addition to exercising and eating healthy. After a hard workout, your muscles may be sore. Sitting in an ice bath for five minutes can reduce how sore you feel the next day after a workout by 20 percent, stated by Greatist. The cold shoulder vest could help your upper core body relax tight muscles while burning more calories.

In America, 34.9 percent of the population is obese according to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention. Using these gadgets or finding your own routine could help you not become the 34.9 percent. You could even find another gadget or create one of your own. Every body is different, but everybody needs to care.
