No. 17 Iowa State attempted to get back on the winning track against Texas after the Cyclones dropped two of their last three games, but the Longhorns had other plans.

They sent Iowa State home with its third loss, 94-91, in the first four Big 12 games.

The Cyclones (12-4, 1-3 Big 12) and Longhorns (10-6, 2-2 Big 12) appeared to be evenly matched for much of the first half with the two teams tied at 36 with 3:45 to go. In a major turning point, Texas used a 13-2 run to end the half and go into the locker room with a 49-38 lead.

Iowa State’s defense had been a concern in recent weeks, and the Cyclones again looked lost defensively, allowing 49 first-half points to a team that that scored 57 and 60 points for the entire game in its last two outings.

The Longhorns found success from 3-point land, which has developed into an Achilles heel of the ISU defense. Texas hit on 9-of-18 3-pointers in the first half while building up a halftime lead.

Iowa State chipped away and forced a tie, but back-to-back Longhorn 3-pointers stretched the lead again.

Iowa State would again tie the game with just over a minute remaining in the game. Texas scored on its next possession with 37 seconds left to go up by two, but Iowa State answered. The Longhorns couldn’t convert on their final possession sending the game into overtime.

Texas controlled much of the overtime, repeatedly leading by four, and then Iowa State would cut it to two before Texas went up by four yet again. Isaiah Taylor hit 1-of-2 free throws with 22.4 seconds left to put Texas up, 94-91.

Matt Thomas air-balled a deep 3-pointer wit 4 seconds left, but the officials ruled the ball was tipped, giving Iowa State the ball back. Georges Niang would miss a final 3-point attempt, giving Texas a 94-91 win.

Next up, Iowa State will travel to Manhattan, Kan., for another Big 12 road game. The Cyclones will face off against Kansas State on Saturday at 2 p.m.
