Demitri Martin headlined this year’s WinterFest, filling the Great Hall to capacity Friday, December 4.

Students crammed themselves into the Great Hall, Sun Room and extension rooms to see Martin perform his stand-up routine.

Comedian Ryan O’Flanagan from the popular sitcom “New Girl” opened for Martin.

O’Flanagan’s style contrasted with what the audience was expecting from Martin. O’Flanagan has a short story format to most of his jokes and bits, whereas Martin’s comedy is focused on one-liners.

O’Flanagan pleased the audience with an off-color sense of humor. He opened with a story about meeting his hot and deaf next-door neighbor, warming up the audience with his zany personality and overly awkward delivery.

He addressed the males of the audience, to share some “dude stuff” with his fellow bros. This bit, perfect for a college audience, hit well with not only the dudes, but with everyone in the room.

Martin came out to an excited crowd, not needing to tell any actual jokes to get a laugh from the eager audience. Simple quips and observations about the room and the university accustomed the crowd to his quick, rhythmic style.

For his prepared material, Martin mixed jokes from his recent comedy special on Netflix, some of his favorite older material and a few new jokes for his tour.

Martin also used two bits involving large sketchpads. The first was of simple drawings with clever monologues to go with each. The second was a number of phrases with words missing. Martin filled the blank space with a word that was good for the phrase, a word that made the phrase bad and a word that made it interesting.

The regular stand-up format and the sketchpad bits all worked well and pleased the audience, but nothing compared to Martin telling jokes while playing the guitar.

The guitar emphasizes his rhythmic style for one-liners. He used mostly material from his Netflix special for the guitar routine, but snuck in some crowd work, leading to several jokes about the albino squirrel.

Both comedians performed very well for an excited crowd, making for an excellent WinterFest show.
