Winter is just around the corner, and in Iowa that means snow.

Iowa sees both warmer winters as well as some winters that turn the state into an absolute tundra, and over the years the snowfall totals have fluctuated for the city of Ames to reflect that.

The snowfall totals for Ames every year for the past ten years during the month of December, according to usclimatedata.com, are:

2004: .98 inches

2005: 13.27 inches

2006: 0 inches

2007: 6.96 inches

2008: 12.72 inches

2009: 23.5 inches

2010: 9.29 inches

2011: .51 inches

2012: 9.99 inches

2013: 1.96 inches

2014: .51 inches

The City of Ames uses 2,500 tons of salt and 50,000 gallons of salt brine annually to combat snow and ice on roads, said Justin Clausen, operations manager of the City of Ames.

Although much of Ames falls under the City of Ames jurisdiction, business owners and residents of Ames are responsible for some snow removal on paths.
