Keenan: Benefits of napping in college

Joellen Keenan

It’s a college cliche, but if there is anything better than laying down for a nap between classes it could only be waking up from one. Everyone loves naps, because what is not to completely fall head over heels for? It’s sleeping — during the day. Not only that, but it is widely accepted as a normal thing people do – especially in college. In fact, normally if a college student hears that someone else took a nap and said student didn’t get to take one that day, there’s usually a sense of jealousy.

Aside from the sanity naps provide, did you also know that naps can be beneficial? I was especially excited to learn this because now when I’m faced with multiple tasks and responsibilities during my day, laying down for a nap weighs a little less heavily on my conscience.

According to a CNN article, “the daytime nap can do wonders to improve alertness, performance and overall mood — and for many, they offer a moment of relaxation.”

The National Sleep Foundation recommends naps that are about 20 minutes long. This may not be the three hours you really want, but even those 20 minutes can make you feel completely refreshed and keep you going – especially during what is sure to be a hectic finals week this semester.

The important thing to remember about napping is to do it in moderation, because as I’m sure you’ve heard, everything is good in moderation. Naps fall into that category, so just maybe don’t spend the entirety of your days sleeping. Naps are perfect for those times when you feel way too groggy and out-of-sorts to even look at the pile of things you have to get done. They’ll wake you up and give you the boost you need to crank out homework assignments and study for exams.

So, nap away. Dream about beautiful places and things – free of papers and quizzes. For 20 minutes, forget about your to-do list and think about your health instead.
