The brooms came out in the Big 12 opener for Iowa State volleyball as the Cyclones defeated the Texas Tech Red Raiders in three sets: 25-19, 28-26 and 25-18.

Iowa State controlled the first set with constant kills and blocking to make it impossible for Texas Tech to make a comeback. Samara West led the first set with five kills and finished the match with eight of the team’s kills.

The second set started off strong for Iowa State as it had a 12-7 lead, but Texas Tech went on an 8-0 run to take the lead. The Cyclones didn’t back down and tied it at 23 and later won the set, 28-26.

After winning the close second set and creating a 2-0 lead, Iowa State never looked back and finished its objective by winning the third set, 25-18. Freshman outside hitter Jess Schaben and junior outside hitter Ciara Capezio finished with a combined 23 kills.

Iowa State takes its 1-0 record in the Big 12 and to Norman, Okla., next, to take on Oklahoma in a two-match road trip.

The match will start at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Iowa State has a 14-6 record against Oklahoma since coach Christy Johnson-Lynch has taken over the program.
