ISU volleyball complication vs. Texas Tech in 2014

In Iowa State’s first match against Texas Tech in 2014, on Oct. 18, the Cyclones and Red Raiders had traded sets with the match in the decisive fifth set. The Lady Raiders held an 8-5 lead inside of their home gym in Lubbock, Tex., and ISU volleyball coach Christy Johnson-Lynch went to make a substitution — Morgan Kuhrt for Alexis Conaway.

However, after the substitution was made, the officials at the scorer’s table claimed the substitution was illegal, saying that Kuhrt could not be subbed into that particular spot in the rotation. After an 11-minute conversation between the officials and coaching staffs, the ruling was upheld. Two things resulted from the ruling: Texas Tech was awarded a point for substitution infraction and Iowa State was deducted a point for delay of game. Thus, the score now read 9-4 in favor of the Red Raiders.

Texas Tech went on to win the set, 15-12 and thus, the match. However, immediately following the conclusion of the match, Johnson-Lynch filed a formal grievance to the Big 12. After the grievance was initially denied and later accepted, the Big 12 ruled that the match would count towards the Big 12 standings as a win for Texas Tech, but not towards RPI, which affects NCAA Tournament bids.

Although Iowa State accepted this ruling, Texas Tech did not, wanting to replay the final set. After a number of back-and-forth proposals, it was agreed upon that the match would be resumed in Ames on Nov. 26, before the two teams were set to play the second conference match.

Thus, on that day, the game resumed at 8-5 in the fifth set, and the Cyclones went on to win, 18-16. The Cyclones also won the match that followed, 3-0.

Iowa State will face Texas Tech for the first time in 2015 at 1 p.m. on Sept. 16 at Hilton Coliseum.
