No. 21 Iowa State capped off the Cyclone Invitational with a win and a loss against North Dakota and Marquette, respectively, at Hilton Coliseum on Aug. 29.

The Cyclones defeated the Bison in four sets to begin the second day of the invitational (20-25, 25-15, 25-20, 26-24 ).

In the opening set, North Dakota dominated play. Iowa State committed 10 attacking errors and four serving errors with a .049 hitting percentage compared to North Dakota’s .133.

When it looked like Iowa State was about to get back into the game and possibly take the lead, North Dakota found a way to stall the Cyclones, eventually taking the set.

Junior Morgan Kuhrt led the Cyclones in kills with five in the opening set.

It was a whole different story in the second set. It started back and forth, but Iowa State started running away with it later in the set.

The Cyclones amounted an 11-point lead while also improving its hitting to .149.

Set three was more of the same for Iowa State with the team taking it 25-20.

But set four was different.

North Dakota found a way to grab its first lead since the opening set.

Iowa State would fight back, but North Dakota would find a way to stop the ISU attack. Until the end at least.

The Cyclones finally tied the set at 23 and took the lead with a score of 24-23. But North Dakota would tie it back up at 24. Iowa State tallied two straight points to take the set and the match with a final score of 26-24.

A three-hour wait later, the Cyclones took the court once again against Marquette.

Iowa State started the game the same way it started its first two games of the season: behind early.

The Cyclones took the lead with a 3-2 score, but after a 5-0 run by Marquette, they were unable to regain the lead, eventually falling 25-20.

Iowa State took the lead first in the second set, jumping to a four-point lead.

However, Marquette battled back and regained the lead. It was all Marquette after the run as the Golden Eagles went on to win set two, 25-21.

In the second set Iowa State committed 10 errors and its hitting percentage went from .119 to .025.

The third set was just as unfavorable as the first and second set.

Although Iowa State fought back in this set, its effort was not enough, dropping the set 26-24. The Cyclones committed 27 attacking errors and three serving errors.

Iowa State ended the weekend with a 2-1 record.

The Cyclones will hit the road for the first time this season as they travel to Charlottesville, Va., to participate in the Cavalier Classic on Aug. 4 and 5.
