A year after breaking through for its first appearance in the NCAA Championship in program history, the ISU women’s golf team was unable to make it two in a row as its season ended at the Raleigh, N.C. NCAA regional tournament Saturday.

With a 40-over-par team total of 904 for the tournament, No. 34 Iowa State finished tied for 10th out of 18 teams competing at Lonnie Poole Golf Course. Iowa State fell 12 shots shy of sixth place, which was the cutoff to advance to nationals.

From the beginning, the Cyclones were in a hole after a 15-over-par first round of 303 put them in 12th place.

From that point on, Iowa State posted another 303 and closed with a 298 to nudge up the leaderboard, but a chance at the top six was never realistic.

Like much of the season, freshman Celia Barquin and senior Chonlada Chayanun led the way, while the rest of the lineup was unable to match the production of a duo ranked 62nd and 57th in the NCAA, respectively, by Golfstat.

Barquin tied for ninth place out of 96 golfers and posted rounds of 75, 70 and 73 to lead the team. She finished 10 shots behind individual champion, Madelene Sagstrom of Louisiana State.

Chayanun finished three shots behind and tied for 12th place with rounds of 72, 74 and 75 in her last event as a Cyclone.

Freshman Nattapn Siritrai tied for 48th, but moved up 19 spots on the leaderboard after a 73 in the final round.

Junior Cajsa Persson tied for 83rd and freshman M.J. Kamin tied for 86th.
